“When we go to a retreat or a conference, it’s because we have a need to be filled up, to be refreshed and inspired for the journey of life that’s ahead of us.” said Alison Buck, Event Director. “We can sometimes think “What’s in it for me?” or “I really hope to get something good this time.” Truly, there is an example that Jesus set of getting away with the Father to recharge, so to speak, and to be more attuned to His will. Our desire is for women to not only be refreshed, but also equipped to be and to do what God is calling them to AFTER the retreat is over. This year, we wanted to provide several tangible ways to experience God’s love personally and corporately, plus put what their receiving into action. Hearing truth is only one part of understanding. Doing it, living it out, is the other.
For some women, they want to get out of the building and MOVE! We have a mission field right on campus – the University of Findlay! How can we bless them in a simple way? Through prayer! Women will be invited to go out in small groups and participate in a prayer walk, stopping at many of the buildings and praying specific prayers for the staff, faculty and students.
For some women, they want to use their hands and creativity to bless others. We will be making jewelry and assembling gift bags for our sisters in Haiti to let them know we remember them beyond just an occasional missions trip or letter, and that we love them. We are asking all of our women coming to consider donating small items such as lotions, soaps, toothbrushes, scarves, etc.
Finally, we are holding a Fine Arts Auction that will include a wide variety of art such as pottery, sculptures, paintings, chalk art, photography and jewelry. The proceeds from the auction will be offered to Chloe, Inc., which is a non-profit organization based in the Greater Columbus Area to mentor teen moms.
All of these “Love Through Service” activities are easily repeatable in your own context. This aspect of the retreat allows us to use our gifts, maybe even discover our gifts and passions, and learn how to work together as The Body of Christ for the sake of furthering the Kingdom on earth. We want to be people of blessing no matter where we are or what we do, that as others see our good works they will glorify God and come deeper into relationship with Him.”
